Council Staff help tidy the town.
Barnstaple Town Council staff swapped computers and pens for hi-vis jackets and garden forks on Wednesday 11th February, as part of the Council’s mission to tidy up the town’s green and planted areas.
The initiative follows significant cuts in highways grounds maintenance by Devon County Council, which have prompted much concern locally. Inspired by a similar ‘tidy up day’ by Webbers Estate Agents staff last November, the Town Council set to work to improve one of the town’s ‘grot spots’, and hopes to encourage other groups to come forward to do more of the same.
This approach has been developed by an informal community partnership involving businesses, community groups and individuals. Other initiatives include:
*Sponsorship of green and planted areas – seven groups have already come forward to take responsibility for roundabouts and other planted areas.
*A register of volunteers who are willing to give up time to help tidy up the town.
*Directly funded works by the Town Council.
