County Council withdrawal of bus services
At its Full Council meeting yesterday (13th April 2015), Barnstaple Town Council resolved to submit the following comment in relation to the current County Council consultation on reductions and withdrawal of bus services in Devon:
“Barnstaple Town Council expresses its deep disappointment at Devon County Council’s proposals to reduce or withdraw 21 bus services serving Barnstaple. As with previous reductions in care, highways, libraries and youth provision, these service cuts will have a significant adverse impact on some of the most economically and socially disadvantaged residents in Devon.
“The Town Council understands the financial position facing the County Council, but as with previous cuts, we consider that not enough has been done to reduce ‘back office’ costs, and no consideration has been given to involving the Town Council in looking for alternative ways of retaining these services.
“The proposals as they stand will disadvantage the elderly, the disabled, the low paid, students, and most incomprehensibly, those in poor health. The withdrawal of services serving North Devon District Hospital is completely unacceptable, risking as it does the health of our community.
“We call on the County Council to reconsider the proposals and the timetable for review. The County’s reserves are by any measure sufficient to maintain these services for long enough to engage meaningfully with the Town Council to protect local services on behalf of its residents.”
The consultation is open until 20th April so there’s still time for individuals and groups to comment on the proposals at https://new.devon.gov.uk/publictransportbudget/
