Armed Forces Exhibition comes to Barnstaple
ARMED FORCES EXHIBITION
25th TO 27th JUNE
The annual Armed Forces Exhibition has found a new home in Barnstaple from this year, and runs from Thursday 25th to Saturday 27th June 2015. Saturday’s events are fully open to the public, whilst activities on the Thursday and Friday are educational days for local schools.
This annual highlight of the North Devon events calendar is proving more and more popular each year, and has moved from Bideford to a new venue at Pilton Community College in Barnstaple in 2015 as a further sign of its expansion.
The free event, led by North Devon Veterans Association and organised in partnership with a range of other organisations, charts military history through displays of equipment and memorabilia as well as live demonstrations. Forces veterans are also on hand to bring the displays to life and answer visitors’ questions, and to provide volunteer visitors with the chance to try out some of the equipment – but naturally only deactivated equipment!
Plans for the event this year include:
* Medieval re-enactments
*Displays from RMB Chivenor, 6 Rifles, Air Cadets, Army Cadets and Sea Cadets
*Careers information from all three branches of the armed forces
*Displays and demonstrations of military hardware
*A major display of photographs documenting past conflicts, with veterans on hand to guide, explain and bring these military memories to life
*A Drumhead Service (27th June only) commemorating those who lived, fought and died in conflicts.
All this and more will be available to the public from 10.00am on Saturday 27th June, with no charge for admission. A more detailed programme of events is to be published nearer the date.
The schools’ days on 25th and 26th June offer similar content, and aim to complement formal curriculum activity. Up to 2,000 pupils are expected over the two days.
Town Mayor Cllr Mrs Val Elkins said “I am delighted that this prestigious educational and community event has found a new home in Barnstaple. I wish the organisers every success and hope that this is the beginning of a lasting addition to Barnstaple’s already strong links with the armed forces.”
Dave Gilbody, spokesperson for the North Devon Veterans Association commented “We are very excited about bring the event to Barnstaple, and look forward to bringing our armed forces – past and present – to the local community. This year’s line-up for the exhibition is already very attractive, and we hope to add even more in the weeks running up to the event.”
