Barnstaple Heritage Tours every Thursday
Join us for a fascinating ramble around Barnstaple hearing about its history and characters of the past. Imagine the hustle and bustle of the old quay, the ships coming in with their cargo and deals being struck over the Tome Stone which is still in place outside the Heritage Centre. You can almost hear the muskets of the Civil War being shot in Litchdon Street when you spot the bullet holes in the Alms Houses doors. Barnstaple’s heritage is rich with exciting stories and tales and our volunteer tour guides can’t wait to take you around the town.
Walking tours take place every Thursday at 11am throughout the summer, starting from outside the Heritage Centre. The tours are in small groups so you’ll have plenty of time to ask questions or walk at your own pace, however it doesn’t mean places will fill up quickly so you may wish to book in advance on 01271 373003 or in person at the Heritage Centre on the Strand. Your ticket includes free entry to the Heritage Centre before or after your tour.
If you are fascinated by local history and have time to spare you may wish to join the team as a tour guide. We will give you full training, you’ll start of by shadowing one of our experienced guides until you are confident to lead a group. Tour guides run the regular Thursday tours but also visits for groups with special interests. Please do contact Dion or Sue at the Heritage Centre if you are interested.
