Vandalism in Castle Green

Benches on Castle Green

I was appalled to hear on Thursday (16 July) that two picnic tables in Castle Green had been set alight and destroyed, and in the process caused significant damage to a mature tree.  The Police are aware of this mindless act of vandalism and are investigating.  I hope very much that the perpetrators can be brought to justice.

Although the Green itself is owned and managed by North Devon Council, the Town Council installed the picnic tables with their permission.  The initial advice I have received is that some form of accelerant is likely to have been used as the tables were made from fire resistant material.

The tables have been removed and disposed of as they were damaged beyond repair, and we are in communication with North Devon Council over the damage to the tree and surrounding grass.  We will also talk to them about how best to proceed in terms of future provision of picnic facilities.

This senseless vandalism is completely unacceptable and we are determined that it should not go unpunished.  The Police are reviewing evidence to identify the culprits, but I would urge anyone with any information to contact the Police on the 101 non-emergency number, quoting crime reference CR-49283-15, or to contact the Town Council on 01271 373311.
