The Town Council took over the maintenance of Barnstaple’s roadside verges from Devon County Council in April 2016. We cut the roadside grass up to six times a year, carry out maintenance on roadside shrub beds, and selectively control weed growth on the highway. Most of this work is carried out by contractors, but we also employ two staff whose roles include providing urgent or one-off additional work on the roadsides.
We also operate a very successful sponsorship scheme for roadside areas in Barnstaple. 24 areas in the town are now sponsored by businesses, community groups and individuals. The three-year sponsorship agreement is simple and free, provided it conforms to certain basic conditions. See our Get Barum Blooming page if you’d like to become part of this very successful partnership.
The Council also looks after various green spaces in Barnstaple, including The Square and a range of footpaths. Our staff can often be seen out and about across the town.
We manage five allotment sites in Barnstaple, with over 200 tenants.
