HERITAGE & CULTURE
The Town Council is committed to the preservation and promotion of Barnstaple’s heritage. We want to make sure our history is seen and understood by as many people as possible, residents and visitors, whether keen historians or not. We do this by maintaining some important historic buildings, and by providing activities and events that make the most of our heritage, where possible in partnership with other local organisations.
Partnership is also important in helping us to provide arts, cultural and community events and activities. We work with a range of bodies to deliver events around the town each year.
We own and manage Barnstaple Guildhall, home to some magnificent heritage artefacts and a venue for Council business, events, private hire, and weddings. We also look after the Albert Clock in The Square.
We own St Anne’s Arts & Community Centre, the Chapel is a gothic building in miniature, and is one example of an extraordinary group of historic buildings concentrated in between Barnstaple’s two main shopping streets. It is also a fantastic example of partnership working, as we have just entered into a partnership with The Plough Arts Centre who will run the centre for us. Look out for their fantastic new programme of events coming this Autum 2017.
The Town Council provides a range of annual civic and community events, including Mayor Making, the Mayor’s Civic Service, Barnstaple Fair Proclamation, Remembrance Services, Community Day and Wellbeing Day.
